External wall coatings are protective, coloured finishes applied to the outside of a building, including masonry paints and more specialist silicone and flexible coatings. Beyond improving appearance, a good coating helps shield brick, block and render from rain, frost and general weathering.
The right coating depends on the surface and its condition. Breathability matters: a coating needs to keep rain out while still letting moisture vapour escape from within the wall. Otherwise, moisture can become trapped behind the finish and cause it to blister, flake or fail early.

Exterior masonry paint is the most familiar option for refreshing painted brick, block and render. Quality masonry paints are formulated to withstand UK weather, resist fading and allow the wall to breathe. They suit walls in reasonable condition where the main aim is a clean, even, protective finish.
Silicone-based coatings are highly water-repellent while remaining breathable, so rain runs off the surface rather than soaking in. They also resist dirt and algae better than standard paints, helping walls stay cleaner longer. Silicone finishes are a popular choice for rendered homes and walls in exposed positions.
Flexible coatings form a thicker, elastic film that can move slightly with the building. This helps them bridge fine hairline cracks that would soon show through ordinary paint. They’re well suited to rendered walls prone to minor cracking, although structural or wider cracks always need repairing before any coating is applied.
Our exterior coatings can be applied to brickwork, blockwork, cement render, concrete and other masonry. If you have unpainted brick you’d like to keep looking like brick, a clear water-repellent treatment is usually the better choice, because once brickwork is painted, returning it to bare brick is difficult.

We inspect the walls, check the condition of any existing paint, render and pointing, and look for signs of damp or movement. We then recommend the coating best suited to the surface, the exposure and the look you want.

We clean the walls to remove dirt, algae and loose or flaking material, then carry out any repairs. This can include patching render, repointing brickwork and treating cracks, so the coating goes onto a sound, stable surface.

Where needed, surfaces are primed or stabilised first. We then apply the coating in suitable weather, building up an even finish at the manufacturer’s recommended coverage. Windows, doors and surrounding surfaces are protected throughout.
